Recommendations to the patient after tooth extraction

Tooth extraction is a responsible procedure. First, it requires verified actions of our dental surgeons, and then - strict adherence to recommendations by the patient himself. Only in this way will there be no problems after tooth extraction, and healing will be quick and smooth.

WHAT IS NORMAL AFTER TOOTH EXTRACTION?

The following is considered an acceptable condition:

pain in the area of the socket, which is well relieved by painkillers;

difficulty opening the mouth;

a short-term increase in body temperature to 38 degrees;

discharge of blood from the wound in the first 12 hours after the intervention;

a feeling of numbness or impaired sensitivity in the area of tooth extraction.

WHEN IS IT BEST TO SEE A DENTIST AFTER A TOOTH IS EXTRACTED?

You should also see a dentist if:

you have persistent pain and/or increased pain

you have continued bleeding for 12 or more hours after surgery;

swelling persists for 5 days;

you have any concerns, doubts or questions to ask your doctor.

WHAT TO DO AFTER A TOOTH IS EXTRACTED?

The main recommended actions that contribute to rapid recovery and healing include:

biting a gauze pad in the first 20 minutes after surgery;

using cold compresses in the first 3 hours after tooth extraction;

eating products that do not irritate the mucous membrane

following careful hygiene rules, including changing your toothbrush after surgery;

smoking. If you cannot give it up, you need to seriously limit the bad habit, smoking up to 5 cigarettes per day.

limit physical activity.

IF THE BLEEDING DOES NOT STOP: WHAT TO DO?

Bleeding gums in the first 12 hours after extraction is considered normal. If bleeding continues, first of all, we recommend staying calm and contacting a doctor. The following recommendations will help stop bleeding gums:

placing your head above your heart, for which you can either lie on a high pillow or take a sitting/standing position;

do not spit saliva with blood, this will only be an additional irritating factor that will provoke bleeding;

applying cold to the cheek in the area of the extracted tooth.

We also recommend measuring blood pressure. And in case of heavy blood loss, immediately contact the clinic to the surgeon.

WHAT TO RINSE YOUR MOUTH WITH AFTER TOOTH EXTRACTION?

Rinsing should not be done on the first day after extraction. They can interfere with the formation of a clot in the hole and normal healing. Only baths with chlorhexidine or another antiseptic are allowed: the solution is simply poured into the mouth, held for a while, and carefully rinsed out.
