Recommendations to the patient after endodontic treatment
treatment (tooth root canal treatment):
Root canal treatment is a dental procedure that allows you to save a tooth. It consists of removing infected tissues from the root canal system, mechanical, medicinal, ultrasonic treatment of the canals, filling the canal system with a healing (temporary) or permanent material. To make the treatment as comfortable as possible, we suggest you follow your doctor's recommendations:
1. Endodontic treatment is often performed under anesthesia. Numbness in the upper jaw can last for 1-2 hours, and in the lower jaw much longer, for 2-4 hours, depending on your anatomical features. At this time, you should not eat so as not to damage (bite) the soft tissues of the cheek, tongue, lips.
2. After the anesthesia wears off, aching pain and/or discomfort may occur when biting the tooth. This is due to the body's natural biological reaction to the intervention and the presence of a healing or filling material in the canal(s) of the tooth, and also depends on the degree of inflammation already present at the time of your visit in the tissues surrounding the roots of the tooth. These sensations may persist for several days. We recommend that you limit the chewing load on the treated tooth for this period. If necessary, you can take a painkiller recommended by your doctor. If the pain intensifies, swelling appears, the temperature rises, you must immediately contact a doctor by calling the center.
3. In no case should you heat the tooth and the area around it!
4. After endodontic treatment, the tooth is covered with a temporary filling-bandage. Within 30 minutes, this filling-bandage completely hardens. We recommend not eating for the first 2 hours after treatment (see point 1), and also to reduce the chewing load on the treated tooth during the entire treatment period. The filling-bandage may crumble slightly when chewing and an unusual taste may be felt in the mouth. If the temporary filling falls out, it is necessary to close the cavity with a cotton ball and immediately consult a doctor to prevent infection from entering the root canal system.
5. After the endodontic treatment, the crown of the tooth is weakened. To prevent the formation of chips, cracks, and fractures of the tooth, which, according to absolute medical indications, require removal, it is recommended to restore the tooth with a permanent filling or inlay immediately after endodontic treatment and/or cover the tooth with a permanent orthopedic structure (crown) within a period of no more than 1 month after the permanent filling of the root canals. The crown of the tooth can be temporary or permanent. This will allow hermetically close access to the root canals, prevent their re-infection, strengthen the weakened walls of the tooth, fully restore the shape of the tooth and the chewing function as a whole.
6. Exclude visits to the bathhouse, sauna in the first three days after treatment and avoid hypothermia.
7. It is mandatory to repeat the X-ray diagnostics of the endolized tooth after 6 months, after 1 year, after 2 years, 4 years to control the quality of the treatment.
8. If the tooth had an inflammatory process, immediately after the completion of its treatment, this tooth should be covered with a temporary crown. With positive dynamics (reduction or disappearance of the inflammatory process) in the tooth, which is confirmed radiographically, after 1 year - cover the tooth with a permanent crown.
What is the norm and should not cause concern to the patient:
Slight involuntary pain in the first 1-2 days after treatment.
Soreness when biting in the first 1-7 days after treatment.
When you should immediately contact a doctor:
The appearance of swelling of the soft tissues of the face or mucous membrane in the area of the treated tooth.
Involuntary pain and pain when biting for more than 7 days after treatment.
